An eVisa is a digital proof of an individual’s immigration status, eliminating the need for physical documents such as biometric residence permits (BRPs), visa vignette stickers in passports, immigration stamps, or biometric residence cards (BRCs).
Advantages of eVisas:
eVisas offer notable benefits to those with immigration status in the UK:
They cannot be lost, stolen, or damaged.
They allow users to securely and accurately prove their status while sharing only necessary information.
They reduce delays when travelling internationally, provided travellers use the passport or ID linked to their UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account.
Access to various government services and benefits becomes easier as departments can directly verify immigration status. The Home Office ensures that customer data is securely stored and is never sold. Further information on how the Home Office handles customer data can be found here on GOV.UK
From 2024, users can easily create an eVisa account through the official UK government site at www.gov.uk/evisa, even using an expired BRP if necessary. Those with BRPs will continue to use the online right to work and rent services as long as they have valid status but are encouraged to set up a UKVI account.
Access to Public Services with eVisas:
Certain government bodies, such as the Department for Work and Pensions and the NHS in England and Wales, can already confirm the immigration status of eVisa holders, streamlining benefit claims and healthcare access without the need for proof of status. Customer data remains secure and is never sold.
Impact on International Travel:
Travellers should carry their valid physical immigration documents when travelling internationally, if available. Existing eVisa holders should notify the Home Office if they plan to use a passport not already linked to their account, using the designated service on the government website. They can do this using the ‘Update your UK Visas and Immigration account details’ service at www.gov.uk/update-uk-visas-immigration-account-details.
In 2024, the Home Office will enable carriers—such as airlines, ferries, and international train operators—to automatically verify passengers’ immigration status through their linked passports. This development will streamline standard travel checks and enhance border security while making travel more convenient.
